EPTON ENJOYS MAIDEN PORSCHE CARRERA CUP TEST AT DONINGTON
Established single-seater campaigner David Epton declared himself very happy with his Porsche Carrera Cup GB track debut at Donington Park National Circuit earlier today, the outing coming as part of the official test which precedes this weekend's 11th and 12th rounds of the season.
Having announced his switch from the Formula Renault UK Championship last week, the Preston-based 26-year-old got his first ever taste of a 400bhp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car during two 45-minute sessions of testing at the 1.96-mile Leicestershire venue today and ended the outing 10th overall on combined times with a best lap of 1m 10.691 seconds (99.67mph).
During the first session David was eighth fastest with a lap of 1m 11.279 seconds (98.85mph) and even though he improved by six 10ths of a second during the afternoon stint in his Team Parker Racing-run Porsche, the Honeywell Aerospace, Universal Weather & Aviation Inc and Imperial Jet-backed ace says there is much more to come throughout the race weekend itself.
"I really did enjoy my first run in the Porsche today and I'm aiming to be in the top eight for my first qualifying on Saturday", commented the Carrera Cup debutant, "I'm a bit annoyed I wasn't faster, even though these are my first ever laps in a car of this type, but I know a made a few mistakes and should definitely have got more out of the tyres.
"We'll go through the data, see where I can gain the most time from and as long as I drive smoothly I'm confident we stand a good chance of being in the top eight on the grid. The races will be longer than I've been used to in Formula Renault (both of this weekend's Porsche Carrera Cup GB encounters being contested over 23 laps) but I'm confident we can go well."
As an aside to his Porsche commitments, David did assist the Apotex Scorpio Motorsport Formula Renault UK team during the first of the category's two test sessions today and at the wheel of the squad's second car, which he raced at Thruxton and Croft earlier this year, the 2005 Formula Palmer Audi Vice-Champion set a best lap of 1m 07.226 seconds (104.81mph).
His focus now, however, is solely on his maiden Porsche Carrera Cup GB weekend and with Donington Park being a venue David particularly enjoys, the Hampshire-raised racer is looking forward to a highly successful competitive debut on Saturday.
