AL HARTHY QUALIFIES FOURTH IN PRO-AM 1 AT SNETTERTON
Following a lengthy seven week summer break the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship returned to action at Snetterton in the east of England today, Saturday, 7th August, with Oman's Ahmad Al Harthy picking-up where he left off with a strong performance during round 11 and 12 qualifying.
Securing the fourth fastest time in the Pro-Am 1 Class for both of Sunday's 24 lap races at the 1.95 mile Norfolk track, the Middle Eastern star produced a best effort of 1m09.881 seconds (100.55mph) to just shade Redline Racing team-mate, and fellow Pro-Am 1 driver, Archie Hamilton.
Although Hamilton matched Ahmad's best to the exact 1,000th of a second, the Omani 28-year-old was credited with fourth in class due to the fact he set the lap time first. Taking into account second best laps, which determined the grid for race two tomorrow, Ahmad again sealed fourth in Pro-Am1 with a lap of 1m09.907 seconds.
Dark clouds descended on Snetterton as the qualifying session got underway but it remained dry throughout the half-hour period. Even so the session was interrupted by two stoppages, with the second leading to an early conclusion with five minutes remaining on the clock. Ahmad had already chosen to remain in the pits and conserve his tyres for raceday though.
"We took a gamble by not going out for the last few minutes and that paid off, hopefully I should have fresher tyres for the races", said the Oman Air, National Bank of Oman, Nawras, Brand Oman and Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs supported racer, "I'm pleased with our pace today, the goal was to qualify in the top four in Pro-Am 1 and we've done that so I'm very happy."
Heading into tomorrow's race action the Muscat-based driver is fourth in the Pro-Am1 standings, just 16 points behind third placed Tony Gilham who begins both of Sunday's encounters one position ahead of Ahmad on the starting grid.
Round 11 of the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship will get underway at 09.10 tomorrow, Sunday, 8th August, with round 12 -- which will be screened live in the UK on Freeview, cable and digital satellite channel ITV4 -- following at 15.00.
