AL HARTHY QUALIFIES FOURTH IN PRO-AM 1 AT DONINGTON
Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship competitor Ahmad Al Harthy is confident of adding more silverware to his trophy cabinet this weekend after qualifying fourth fastest in the Pro-Am 1 Class at Donington Park today, Saturday, 18th September, for rounds 17 and 18 of the season.
The Omani driver's weekend began superbly during testing on Friday where he posted the second fastest time in Pro-Am 1 of 1m09.226 seconds -- placing him just two 10ths of a second shy of class leader Jonas Gelzinis.
Upping his pace throughout this afternoon's qualifying run at the East Midlands venue's revitalised 1.98-mile National Circuit, Ahmad knocked three 10ths of a second off his quickest testing time to post a best of 1m08.917 seconds (103.37mph).
Placing him fourth on the grid in Pro-Am 1 for Sunday's 17th round of the season, his best qualifying effort was within just 0.7 seconds of the outright pole position and only 0.030 seconds shy of class rival Tony Gilham -- the latter being his fiercest rival for third place in the Pro-Am 1 Championship.
Taking into account second fastest times, which set the grid for round 18, the 29-year-old will again start from fourth in class after producing a lap of 1m08.922 seconds -- just 0.005 seconds away from his quickest time of the session, underlining his fantastic consistency.
"Overall I'm really pleased with my time from qualifying, it's the quickest I've been all weekend and it shows we're moving forward", said the Oman Air, National Bank of Oman, Nawras, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Brand Oman-backed racer, "I need to improve my rhythm more in qualifying, in testing there is more time to get into that groove, but I'm still happy with what we've done today.
"It looks as though the races will probably be wet tomorrow so, from where we are on the grid, it could be good for us as we'll be in a position to capitalise hopefully if anyone makes any mistakes ahead of us. I'm really looking forward to it whatever the weather does, the podium is my aim."
Round 17 of the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship is expected to get underway at 10.45 tomorrow, Sunday, 19th September, with round 18 scheduled to follow at 15.45. The second of the two races will be screened live across the UK on Freeview, cable and digital satellite channel ITV4.
