SUCCESSFUL PORSCHE CARRERA TEST DEBUT FOR METCALFE
Fleet-based motor racing sensation Jeremy Metcalfe produced an excellent performance at Knockhill Circuit in Scotland today to end his maiden test outing in a Porsche Carrera Cup GB car a superb eighth overall on combined times.
The 19-year-old BRDC Rising Star, who makes his championshipdebut in this weekend's 17th and 18th rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at the 1.27-mile Fife venue, set a best lap of 51.848 seconds (88.26mph) during the afternoon to conclude the test just over a second shy of series leader Steven Kane's timesheet-topping best.
Competing in the Porsche Motorsport-prepared VIP car as part of his prize for becoming a finalist in the 2006 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, Jeremy completed 47 laps during today's opening hour of official testing with a best time of 52.912 seconds (86.49mph).
Improving by over a second during the afternoon, the Loughborough University student lapped as high as the fifth fastest driver midway through the second hour before ending the session in eighth position with his time of 51.848 seconds. Kane's best of 50.738 seconds, meanwhile, is actually the fastest ever recorded Carrera Cup lap at Knockhill.
Commenting on his first test outing in a Porsche Carrera Cup GB racer,
eremy said: "I really enjoyed today, it's been an incredible experience and I'm happy with the progress we made. It would have been good to be within a second of the outright pace but we're not far away. Hopefully we can be even faster in qualifying tomorrow."
Of course, the 400bhp 911 GT3 Porsche is a much different beast to the 192bhp Formula Renault UK single-seater Jeremy usually races but he has rapidly taken to the awesome machine and is now relishing tomorrow morning's qualifying session and the first race of the weekend.
"Knockhill is certainly a pretty tricky place to make your debut in one of these cars but I'm hopeful we can have a couple of strong races this weekend. The Porsche Carrera Cup GB is a superb championship, very prestigious, and it's definitely an option we'll seriously consider in our plans for 2008."
Qualifying for the first of the weekend's two 32-lap races will take place at approximately 11.30 tomorrow, Saturday, 1st September, with the 17th round of the championship itself expected to get underway at 16.45.
Round 18 is then timetabled to begin at 11.35 on Sunday, 2nd September and will be screened live on digital satellite, cable and Freeview subscription channel Setanta Sports 1. Please check listings for full details -- times, of course, are subject to change.
