NO REWARD FOR TIM BUIJS DESPITE GOOD RACE AT HOCKENHEIM
HOCKENHEIM, 13 APRIL 2008 - With the experiences of the Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup races last weekend at Bahrain still fresh in his mind, Tim Buijs made his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup at the Hockenheimring. After a strong start the Dutchman was able to get into fourteenth place, but a Drive Through Penalty spoiled his chances. After 18 laps Buijs had to put up with 24th place. In two weeks time the 22-year old driver will face a new challenge in the Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup race at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
FREE PRACTICE + QUALIFYING:
As Jeroen Bleekemolen was unable to race for Mamerow Racing due to clashing commitments in Shanghai for A1GP Team Netherlands Tim Buijs was drafted in to replace him. On a track where it drizzled a bit, Buijs started the first free practice on slicks. After finding the limits on the 4,574 metre long track, he ended the 40-minute long session in 26th place. The second free practice session on Friday afternoon took place in heavy rain. The Dutchman felt like a fish in the water and was able to set quickest times in the different sectors o the track. Scoring a midfield position he went into the qualifying session with a lot of confidence. Buijs went out for a fast lap time, but was never able to peak his new tyres. He found himself back in P28.
When the lights went out on Sunday morning, Buijs had a perfect start on a brand new set of tyres. After the first corner he had already passed four drivers and gained another two positions after the second corner. Buijs crossed the line after the opening lap in 21st position. The rookie was able to continue this trend and managed to work himself up into sixteenth place. Together with Mike Verschuur and Marco Holzer he tried to get further up the field, until the three were suddenly handed a 'Drive Through Penalty'. Buijs and his two opponents were penalized as they were said to have set a faster lap during a yellow flag situation. Due to the penalty Buijs dropped down the order to the back of the field and had to start all over again. He eventually ended the race in 24th place after 18 laps.
TIM BUIJS: "Too bad we got the Drive Through Penalty in the race, because I would have been in the points otherwise. I had a great start and was able to pass a lot of drivers in the early stages of the race. I could have ended in fourteenth place, until the penalty spoiled it all. It is unbelievable that the Drive Through Penalty was handed to me. It is quite normal that you are doing quicker lap times after a several laps into the race. At the start the field is very close to each other, so no fast times will be set then. Nevertheless I managed to keep good progress all through the free practice session, a difficult qualifying session and the race. I will once again race for the Mamerow Racing team in the Porsche Carrera Cup in the third race at Mugello (May 4, Italy). I will now focus on the next Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup race at Barcelona, where I hope to gain more experience!"
