Carrera Cup Asia to make V8 Supercars appearance

Both the Australian and Asian Porsche Carrera Cup series will race at the Sydney Motorsport Park V8 Supercars round next year.

It will be Carrera Cup Asia’s first visit Down Under, and the first time a joint round has been staged in Australia.

While the categories will mostly compete separate – both the Aussie and Asian series to have separate races and score points for their own championships – a yet-to-be-announced format will see the best drivers from each series pitted against each other in some way.

“Combining the two championships has been a long time coming; the Carrera Cup formula is extremely strong in the Asia-Pacific region and it was only a matter of time before we joined forces for a combined Carrera Cup event,” said Porsche Cars Australia’s motorsport boss Kurt Sakzewski.

“As a global formula using identical 911 GT3 Cup race cars, joining Carrera Cup championships is something successfully achieved by other Porsche regions, predominantly in Europe. To bring this to Australia is an exciting prospect

“I have no doubt the Carrera Cup Asia drivers and teams will enjoy the Australian motor racing culture and the unique atmosphere experienced at V8 Supercars events.

“We are committed to holding separate races to maintain each series’ integrity as part of the greater championship chase; however we also look forward to introducing a combined racing element which will certainly add to the spectacle.”
