Opening round winner tops timesheets in first Carrera Cup session.
There were no surprises at Eastern Creek Raceway today as Carrera Cup championship leader Jim Richards was fastest in the opening practice session for this weekend's second round of the all-Porsche series.
Driving his OAMPS Insurance/Greenfield Mowers Porsche GT3 Cup machine, Richards lapped the 3.93-kilometre venue in 1m35.0939s, sending out an ominous sign to his rivals in the process.
However, a number of drivers were well within striking distance of the multiple Targa Tasmania champion, namely Peter Fitzgerald, who finished second to Richards in the championship-opener at Phillip Island three weeks ago. His ENJO car was just over a tenth of a second slower, though three-tenths clear of third-placed Matt Coleman.
Coleman, last year's Porsche Cup champion, had a horror weekend at Phillip Island and is equal 10th in the chase for the Carrera Cup. But he bounced back in style today to be third quickest, clear of Tim Leahey's Mossimo/Greg Murphy Racing machine.
In fact, all three GMR cars were in the top 10, with former Formula Holden Silver Star champions Peter Hill and Roger Oakeshott running well to be ninth and 10th fastest.
Placed third in the championship, Marcus Marshall was fifth fastest, clear of Andrew Miedecke and a strong showing from former AUSCAR/NASCAR ace Rodney Jane.
Paul Pedersen was the best of the International Motorsport/Porsche Motorsport New Zealand 'invaders', clocking the eighth fastest time. All four team cars are running with decals in memory of countryman Possum Bourne, the rally ace who lost his life this week following a road accident in their homeland.
Qualifying will be held tomorrow at 9.00am, with the first 12-lapper to be run from 1.05pm. Races two and three will be held on Sunday.
The Carrera Cup is a nine-round championship supporting the V8 Supercar Championship Series, using identical Porsche GT3 Cup cars that have been specially manufactured for Carrera Cup competition by the Porsche factory in Weissach, Germany.
