Early Speed With Carrera Cup Pace Setter
The form guide proved correct today as the Porsche GT3 911 Cup cars hit the Eastern Creek International Raceway for practice in round two of the Australian Carrera Cup.
The early season pacesetter, Alex Davison (Greg Murphy Racing / Glenfords Tool Centre), started where he left off two weeks ago in Adelaide by clocking today's fastest practice time in the all-Porsche category.
The Melbourne 24-year-old ripped out a best lap time of 1:34.9709 to lead the Carrera Cup timesheet from Porsche combatant and reigning series champion Jim Richards (Jim Richards Racing / OAMPS Insurance Brokers) who clocked 1:35.5705.
There were encouraging signs for the experienced Peter Fitzgerald (Fitzgerald Racing / Acer, SEW Eurodrive) in his quest for his first podium finish for the season. Last year's series third placegetter put in the third fastest lap of the day with a time of 1:35.8450.
Another promising practice performance was put in by Rodney Jane (Rodney Jane Racing / Bob Jane T-Marts) who has stepped back into his 2003 GT3 911 for this round. His 2004 car is still undergoing repairs after a close encounter with the concrete barriers in Adelaide. Jane finished the practice session in fourth position clocking 1:36.2905.
On his first outing at Sydney's 3.93km anti-clockwise Eastern Creek circuit, Fabian Coulthard (Greg Murphy Racing / Team Braun) left plenty of room for improvement over the next two days with a 1:36.3197 lap for fifth fastest.
The top 10 was rounded out by Klark Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods), Ross Rutherford (International Motorsport NZ / Woodstock Bourbon), Paul Pedersen (International Motorsport NZ / Lakesawn Lumber), Peter Bradbury (Team MPS Security) and James Cressey (Team VIP Petfoods).
Qualifying and race one of the Carrera Cup at Eastern Creek is tomorrow, Saturday April 3, with race two and three on Sunday April 4. All races will be contested over 12 laps of the 3.93km anti-clockwise racing circuit. 'Trackside' on Network Ten will telecast this round of the Carrera Cup on Sunday April 18 at 2pm (check local guides).
The Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world with close-to-identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars built by Porsche' racing arm in Weissach, Germany set for racing at Eastern Creek. All cars have a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour with a 400-horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM.
