PORSCHE TRIO BREAK 58 SECONDS IN THE WEST
The inaugural venture of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars onto Barbagallo Raceway in Western Australia for the fourth round of the Australian Carrera Cup proved fast and close.
Reigning series champion Jim Richards (Jim Richards Racing / OAMPS Insurance Brokers) topped the charts in both practice sessions today, setting the day's fastest lap of 57.7188 seconds.
Current championship leader Alex Davison (Greg Murphy Racing / Glenfords Tool Centre), who has secured a full-time V8 Supercar drive in 2005 with Castrol Perkins Motorsport, almost pipped Richards towards the end of practice two, clocking a lap less than a tenth of a second slower than his Porsche adversary.
A rejuvenated Abcor and Acer-backed Fitzgerald Racing team was very pleased with the improvements made to its 911 GT3 Cup car in the three weeks since Hidden Valley. Peter Fitzgerald was the third driver to break 58 seconds today, less than three tenths of a second off Richards' pace.
Rookie pacesetter Fabian Coulthard (Greg Murphy Racing / Team Braun) was fourth fastest today with a best lap of 58.3836 seconds, with fellow Kiwi young gun James Cressey (Team VIP Petfoods) finishing the day in the top five.
Paul Pedersen (International Motorsport NZ / Lakesawn Lumber), who sits sixth in the championship, maintained that position in practice after putting together a sub-59 second lap near the end of the session.
Tony Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods), Peter Bradbury (Team MPS Security), Klark Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods) and Stephen Borness (Celerity Racing / Logiadd) rounded out the top 10 in practice today.
Twelve drivers broke 60 seconds, eight broke 59 seconds and three set a time under 58 seconds in the first ever Australian Carrera Cup session at Barbagallo Raceway.
Round four of the 2004 Australian Carrera Cup at Barbagallo Raceway continues with qualifying and race one over 15 laps tomorrow Saturday June 12, and then race two over 15 laps and race three over 30 laps on Sunday.
The Carrera Cup is the most successful 'one make' championship in the world with close-to-identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars built by Porsche' racing arm in Weissach, Germany set for racing in 2004. All cars have a top speed in excess of 300 kilometres per hour with a 400-horsepower, 6 cylinder Boxer engine which revs to 8000 RPM.
'Trackside' on Network Ten will telecast round three of the Carrera Cup on Sunday June 27 at 2pm (check local guides).
