Vancouver's Jordy Vorrath brings Sunoco's Team Ultra 94 a win at Mosport, and vaults up to second in championship
MOSPORT, ONTARIO - South Surrey, BC's Jordy Vorrath traveled to Mosport International Raceway for the second time in two weeks. Fresh off a second place in the Sunoco presents the GM Racing ASN Canada FIA National Karting Championships the weekend before, Vorrath was back to compete in the third round of the 2003 Bridgestone/FormulaCar Magazine F2000 Racing Series. By Sunday night, Vorrath had another win to his credit and he closed the gap to fellow Sunoco Team Ultra 94 team member Matt Champagne for the championship.
"I'm happy with the win on Friday's race," Vorrath said. "But I really needed a good weekend to close the gap to Matt. Car reliability problems cost me on both days, but I was able to salvage decent finishes. It will now come down to the final weekend, and I can only hope the racing gods will be with me for the final weekend."
Vorrath's weekend started with a pole and a win on Friday. Then on Saturday, he qualified fourth, but raced up to third. "That was tough to take," Vorrath said. "My car was just not up to the task, so I had to take what I could get." On Sunday, Vorrath's original car had a major 'bog' when the power was applied, so he opted for a car change. "The second car I had kept jumping out of fourth. When it is this late in the championship, you sometimes have to make do with what you have - no matter how frustrating it is - and that is what happened. I had to settle for third. It will now all come down to the final weekend."
In the final weekend, the top championship runners will all run in the same group and that will put Vorrath in the same three races as points leader and teammate Matt Champagne. "I want to win, but Matt is fast, and above all we want a one-two championship finish for Sunoco and Ron Fellows."
