Ashley Taws, the seventeen-year-old driver of the Barbie Formula 1200 car, finished second yesterday in a wild race at Mosport International Raceway. The race was held in conjunction with the Mosport 250 CASCAR event.
As usual, Ashley was in the thick of the action all weekend. The Mount Albert, Ontario, resident, was fast in the practice sessions and qualified fourth in a very competitive field of 22 cars.
The race was perhaps even more hotly contested than the typical, action-packed Formula 1200 battle. At the front, a group of six fought tooth and nail throughout the Sunday morning race.
"It was really tough today," Ashley remarked. "I was second, then fifth, then third. Just up and down all the way through the race. It was great fun, but it got a bit out of hand on the last lap."
As the field crossed the line to begin the final tour around Mosport's 4 km (2.5 mile) road course, all bets were off. The action was furious and culminated with an accident just before the final corner. Luckily, Ashley kept clear of the trouble and claimed her third second-place finish of the year as she drove home behind Neal Ryan.
"Vallis Motor Sport has always done a great job and the Barbie car was excellent again this weekend," Ashley said. "There were a few cars that could have won today and we definitely had one of them."
With three seconds and one third so far this season, Ashley has a firm grip on second place in the championship standings and is just seven points shy of points leader Brent Gilkes.
"My goal is to win the championship this year," said Ashley. "If I keep finishing in the top three, the points will add up quickly, but I haven't had a win yet this year and I'm determined to change that next time we race."
The next event on the Isseco/Kumho Formula 1200 calendar is July 21-22 at Shannoville Motorsport Park near Belleville, Ontario.
