Scheckter fastest in practice at Estoril

Estoril, Portugal, 20th April.- South African Tomas Scheckter (Vergani Racing, 1.32.286) has set the best lap time today in collective practices prior to the Open Telefonica 2001 second round this weekend at Estoril circuit. Portuguese Manuel Giao (1.32.379) and current series leader, Frenchman Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff, 1.32.640) have been second and third today. Wind has been a constant along the whole first working day at Estoril.

Only Scheckter, Giao and Montagny have been able to lap below 1.33, and just 0.093 seconds has been the gap between both drivers. Double race winner in Jarama (first round of series) and current leader Frenchman Franck Montagny awaits qualifying practices tomorrow after being third today 3/10 of a second behind Scheckter.

Good performance of series newcomer Jonathan Cochet. The Frenchman, F3 champion in his home country last season, has achieved a remarkable eighth place in his first contact with the Coloni Nissan CN1/C. Not so lucky has been Argentinian Brian Smith (PSN Racing), another series newcomer. Smith has finished 20th of 22, almost 3 seconds behind Tomas Scheckter.

Tomorrow qualifying practices at 10.00 hours (local time) for grid race 1 and 13.00 hours (grid race 2).
