GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (July 25)- Victor Gonzalez Jr. earned his first Barber Dodge Pro Series pole position in qualifying Saturday at the West Michigan Grand Prix.
Gonzalez toured the 13-turn, 1.58-mile Scott Brayton Memorial Street Circuit in 1 minute, 14.999 seconds for an average speed of 75.841 mph during the first of two qualifying sessions.
"It's an honor to start in front with so many good drivers in this series," Gonzalez said. "We really have to fight in qualifying because the competition is so tight and everyone is so good."
Gonzalez's time was nearly a second and a half faster than the best lap from Friday's Pro Series practice session which was turned in by Will Langhorne. Langhorne was third quickest Saturday (1:15.075, 75.764 mph) behind Gonzalez and Nicolas Rondet (1:15.048, 75.791), who qualified second for the second consecutive race. In all 15 drivers were quicker than the standard set by Langhorne on Friday.
The top three drivers in points - Thomas Schie, Todd Snyder and Jeff Simmons - will start together, but in the opposite order from their places in the standings. Simmons is fifth on the grid, Snyder is sixth, and Schie is seventh.
The 40-minute Barber Dodge Pro Series race is Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
