Detroit, MI (August 9, 1999)-- Townsend Bell has a habit of impressing before the start of Barber Dodge races, as he did in Michigan, where he was one of the fastest in practice. The first qualifying session found Bell, who was "going for pole in a big way" pushing perhaps a bit too hard, spinning off the track after completing only three laps. Rain increased lapped time by about twenty seconds in the second session, leaving drivers to grid off their first session. With Bell's #25 DirecPC/PC World Magazine Reynard Dodge qualified 11th, Bell romped on it from the green flag. Working his way through the pack to as high as fifth place, Towndsend's motor experienced an oil leak in the middle of the race which lit up his oil pressure warning lights. These motor troubles found Bell running four to five miles per hour slower in the straights. Trying to make up time lost in the straights, Townsend pushed harder into the corners, a difficult proposition in equally matched cars. A brush with the car of Brian Pelke bent Bell's front wing into his tire, causing him to pit on the last race lap with a 16th place finish. In regards to his rub with Pelke and his off-track excursion during qualifying, Bell tells us that he "unfortunately got caught trying a little too hard today. I knew I was one of the fastest on the track, but just didn't quite keep it together." Aggressive driving seemed a common thread among the points leaders, with numbers one and two in the points race, Simmons and Rossoni, experiencing problems that kept them from finishing on the 14-turn, 2.35-mile Belle Isle street circuit. In the battle for the Barber Dodge championship, Bell guarded 3rd place, followed by Detroit Grand Prix winner Todd Snyder in 4th. Townsend Bell is looking forward to getting back on track during Round 8 of the series at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Complex in Lexington, Ohio Sunday, August 15, and challenging for the top two spots.
