It's An Open-Wheel Festival In Savannah
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (May 9) - In what could be the single largest collection of up-and-coming open wheel racing talent in America, the inaugural Dixie Crystals Grand Prix of Savannah Harbor will host the CART PPG-Firestone Indy Lights Championship, the SCCA Pro Racing Barber Dodge Pro Series and US Formula Ford 2000 championship May 17-19 on the new 10-turn, 1.965-mile Grand Prize Circuit. In Barber Dodge, the Savannah race is round three of the 1997 championship. In the championship chase Rino Mastronardi, winner at St. Petersburg, leads in points, but there are seven other drivers within easy shouting distance of the points lead, including Sebring victor Derek Hill. On a track that no driver will have driven in anger until practice opens Friday morning, its as equal as it can get between the full field of 29 Barber Dodge competitors. One of those entrants is Jeff Simmons, younger brother of Indy Lights points leader Chris Simmons. Jeff is making his professional debut at Savannah in Barber Dodge, after having made his mark the past year in the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Race Series (he was the 96-97 Southern Region championship runner-up). In another sibling connection, Andy Boss meets up with older brother Geoff, driver of the Team Medlin Indy Lights Lola. Andy, the 1994 "Big Scholarship" winner, is second in Barber Dodge points. Three drivers in this year's Indy Lights championship (which awards a $46,000 engine-lease package to each year's Barber Dodge champion) come directly from the Pro Series: Mark Hotchkis won three races and finished second in the 1994 championship; Geoff Boss won five races over the past two years in Barber Dodge and was runner-up in 95; and Fredrik Larsson is the reigning Barber Dodge champion. The espn2 broadcast of the Barber Dodge Pro Series race at the Dixie Crystals Grand Prix is Sunday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern, with replays scheduled for the 10th and 12th./EX
