Hill, Renna Named Co-Rookies of the Year
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (Oct. 17) - Derek Hill and Tony Renna today were named co-winners of the "1996 Skip Barber Racing Barber Dodge Rookie of the Year." As the Rookie of the Year, each wins a paid half-season of 1997 SCCA Pro Racing Barber Dodge competition (value: $65,000). Skip Barber said, "They both did such a terrific job against such a very strong field this year that it just wouldn't have been fair to pick one over the other. And we didn't want to split the prize between them, so against my banker's advice, they both get the six races." Hill, 22, of Santa Monica, Calif., is the son of Phil Hill, the first American to win the Formula 1 World Championship (1961). For Renna, 19, of Deland, Fla., it is the second major award he's won from Skip Barber Racing; last year he was named the "Big Scholarship" driver, which earned him six paid races this past season. Hill finished third in the 1996 championship. He won one race, one pole position and finished in the top-5 a total of seven times. Renna was seventh overall, earning two poles, set fastest race-lap at Sebring and finished on the podium in six races. In September, Renna had earned yet another award, being named the Valvoline Team U.S.A. driver. He will partner Jerry Nadeau (incidently, the 1993 "Big Scholarship" driver) in the prestigious Nations Cup Formula Opel/Vauxhall Union Series races at Donington Park, England, Nov. 2-3. Previous Valvoline Team U.S.A. drivers include 1996 PPG IndyCar champion Jimmy Vasser and Bobby Rahal teammate Bryan Herta (the 1991 Barber Saab Pro Series champion). The 1997 Barber Dodge Pro Series championship begins Feb. 23 at the St. Petersburg Trans-Am Grand Prix.
