The Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by RACER visited historic Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. this weekend for the fifth and sixth rounds of the championship. For the first time this year, the National Championship would run as one large group with 22 drivers rather than two separate groups as in the other rounds.
Anthony Simone of Aurora , Ontario would lead flag to flag to earn his first win in round 5 run on Saturday afternoon. He was certainly not handed the win, however, as he needed to defend against a charging Bryan Sellers of Centerville, Ohio at the start. The initial start waved off due to a spinning Landon Yee in the Canada corner. When the field was turned loose again, Simone got the jump and maintained his lead. Once more after only two laps of green flag racing, Tophie Stewart got into trouble bringing out yet another full course caution. On what was to be the final restart of the race, a slight bobble by Simone let Sellers make a run. The two cars made contact when the recovering Simone came back on a charging Sellers who would later describe it as a “racing incident.”
The contact dislodged the nose from Seller’s car and would significantly affect his straight-line speed. As Simone pulled away from Sellers, Caio Travaglini and Craig Duerson were closing in. On lap 11 Travaglini and Duerson would get by Sellers and attempt to chase down the flying Simone. While Simone clicked off fast, consistent laps, the battle for second through fourth raged behind him.
As the white flag flew, the cars of Travaglini and Duerson were running nose to tail in second and third places respectively. Approaching Canada Corner, Duerson attempted to dive down the inside of Travalglini. The two collided as neither driver was willing to give up the corner. Sellers benefited from the havoc to come through for a fortuitous second place finish.
Meanwhile, Jon Morley of Columbus, Ohio was making an incredible run from the 15th starting position to join the fray at the front. Consistent speed and several excellent passes put him in position to salvage an outstanding result taking the third spot on the winner’s rostrum.
Round six will take place Sunday afternoon, July 2.
