Skip Barber National: Ping Pong pays big dividend to racer at Cleveland Grand Prix
Hendersonville, Tenn. (June 2007) -- Josef Newgarden captured both pole positions, a win in Race 1 and a solid fourth place finish in Race 2 during last weekends BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda Championship. Rounds 5 and 6 of the SBN were run as a support race to the Champ Car Grand Prix held at Burke Lakefront Airport's temporary circuit.
Prior to the event Newgarden predicted a great result due to his extensive karting activity and Olympic caliber Ping Pong training. Josef delivered big on the promise with his sponsor in attendance. Robo-Pong.com is backing the young racers effort in 2007 and they weren't disappointed when witnessing his achievement first hand along with the reported 160,000 other fans that attended during the race weekend.
Once the two races were run and the SBN official point standings were announced, race 2 winner and point leader Joel Miller had increased his lead over virtually every other competitor. Not Newgarden, he closed the gap by 12 points to the leader and jumped up in the standings from 11th to 6th place. After hearing the news Josef stated "I am very impressed with the level of competition in the SBN, particularly Joel Miller; He is a very strong opponent and a great guy off the track, but I am going to continue to train hard and run up front every lap I can. At the end of the season the point standings will just have to take care of itself!"
Next stop for the Robo-Pong.com sponsored driver is the July1st karting event at New Castle Motorsports Park and then to Elkart Lake Wisconsin on July 2nd and 3rd for two days of advanced testing in the Skip Barber cars. Two or three more karting events during July and a lot of Ping Pong in between is what Josef believes will help him achieve the best result in rounds 7 and 8 of the SBN held August 3-5 at Road America.
