"Thunderbolt : Double podium finishes for Gerbi"
The French driver finished 3rd in the two Thunderbolt races, climbing on his tenth podium out of twelve races. The US Barber Mazda Series 11th and 12th rounds happened on the brand new Thunderbolt racetrack, in Millville.
Qualified in 2nd position and starting from the outside row, Julien had an excellent start which sent him into the lead at the first corner. Quickly, the battle for the win happened between the three championship contenders : Gerbi, Lewis and Vernon. It was a real fight for the U.S. title that the spectators assisted to, with those three drivers grouped during the whole-race, having less than one second of gap between the leader and the 3rd placed.
With just two laps to go, an outlapped driver ignored the blue flag and took his line in front of Julien, forcing him to pass in the dust and making him loose more than a second. His chances to win disappeared with this incident, and the French driver brought the car home in 3rd place, after a very strong race. Court Vernon won the race, just before Corey Lewis.
The same scheme happened in Race 2. After having kept the contact with the leaders in the first laps, Julien decided to preserve his 3rd place and to climb on his second podium of the week-end, the tenth out of twelve races.
Julien Gerbi : "The car was performant. Race 1 was very competitive and the car allowed me to fight with Lewis and Vernon. I had some grip problems by the end of the race but it didn't really affect the performance of the car. Race 2 was more difficult, with a soft brake pedal and the fact it was impossible to follow Lewis and Vernon in the straights. I gave my maximum, but when I realised it was not possible to keep the contact with them, I decided to save my third place. It is a good result for the championship, and I now have to focuse on the last round of the season."
Julien takes the 3rd place in general standings, with just one race week-end to go. The Finale will happen in Lime Rock, on September 11th, 12th and 13th, and will crown the US Champion and his runner up.
