Joey Hand, who was drafted to substitute for a still-recovering Sara Senske in the Barber Dodge Pro Series support race at Mid-Ohio, qualified and finished 12th in his first appearance in the series. Senske broke her hand in a testing accident at Sebring four weeks ago, and had the cast removed a few days ago. Rookie Thed Bjork started from the pole, but the event was won by series points leader Jon Fogarty. Hand was Senske's teammate on the Kent Stacy S3 Racing team in the Star Formula Mazda Championship last season, winning three races and the championship. He suffered massive injuries to his left elbow in a kart race after the end of the season, and has endured two operations and five months of physical therapy working to return to the track. He has competed in two kart events, but this is his first car race since the end of last season. "I jumped into the deep end of a very competitive series and the learning curve was unbelievably steep," says Hand, 21, of Sacramento, California. "I finally got it all figured out halfway through the race, but by then it was too late to really make a charge for the front. I'm not exactly happy with finishing twelfth, but it's been a long time since I raced a car and my realistic expectations were to prove that I'm back to a hundred percent physically and to knock off some rust. I achieved that, and I'd like to thank team owners Peggy Haas and Jackie Doty and team manager Steve Cameron for the chance to drive a Lynx car in a race. It's amazing how much respect you automatically get as a Lynx driver, which really says a lot about the team and all they've achieved." Hand will fly from Mid-Ohio to the East Coast to test on Wednesday with Tom Milner's championship-winning PTG BMW team at Summit Point Raceway in Virginia. Sara Senske will return to the seat of the #19 Lynx Racing Reynard 98E for the next round of the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Road America next weekend. She will be joined by the Lynx CART Toyota Atlantic team with drivers David Rutledge and Mike Conte.
