(LAKEVILLE, Conn.) May 27, 2000 -Jon Fogarty captured his first Barber Dodge Pro Series career pole officially today; the time however was set yesterday. The final qualifying session for the fourth round of the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Lime Rock Park yielded no change at the front of the grid. Fogarty proved to be not only fast, but also prophetic. As he suspected today's only session would not be conducive to faster times; thus, he held on to his first pole with the time he set Friday at 00:54.089 sec. Fogarty did set the fastest time of the Saturday session, but it was three-tenths off his pole setting time.
Indeed there were only two changes to the Top-10 as a result of today's session Alexandre Sperafico vaulted into eighth place and Ryan Hunter-Reay will take up the tenth spot on the grid. That leaves Sepp Koster second, alongside Fogarty on the front row. Row two will be Matt Plumb next to Peter Boss, with Andy Lally and Michael Valiante rounding out the third row. Nilton Rossoni, Sperafico, Andre Nicastro, and Hunter-Reay complete the first ten places in the starting order.
"The track actually felt pretty good when we first got out there, but when the sun came out, the concrete patches started to get slippery and the car became a handful," said the Californian driving the Thomas Fogarty Wines Barber Dodge Reynard. "I am going to take the rest of the day today and tomorrow to relax, and not even think about the race, then come back fresh on Monday and be ready to rock."
Koster for his part feels confident with the improvements made to his Blue Bay Curacao Golf Resorts Barber Dodge Reynard single-seater despite not making any improvements to his time. A fast lap was in the offing for him as the session drew to a close. That lap however was foiled by traffic.
"We definitely made an improvement between yesterday and today," said the amiable Dutchman. "The strategy for Monday is going to be to get a jump on Jon at the start, and if not to slot in behind and see what develops."
Matt Plumb lining up third will make this his best starting position of the year. Afterwards he was content with the result as he could have been demoted. Plumb was experimenting with his settings in the beginning of the session only to discover that it was not the way to go. He eventually sorted the car's balance but the session had drawn to a close before he could get the most from his CAM 2 Barber Dodge Reynard. Nevertheless he's confident in the car's ability come race day.
"I know now that we've sorted the car that we can go as fast if not quicker than we had, so I think we're in good shape for the race," commented Plumb.
As has come to be expected in Barber Dodge qualifying, there is not much between those at the head of the field. The first 14 cars are within one second of one another and only two and half seconds separate the entire field going into Monday's race. Start time for the fourth round of the 2000 Barber Dodge Pro Series is slated for 11:40 a.m.
