(LEXINGTON, Ohio) Aug. 11, 2000 - In the fashion of some of the sport's greats, Dutchman Sepp Koster went on a flying last lap, and snagged the provisional pole for round 7 of the Barber Dodge Pro Series at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in support of the CART FedEx Miller Lite 200. Koster set the benchmark for Saturday's final session in his Blue Bay Curacao Golf Resort Barber Dodge Reynard with a sub record time of 1:24.015 sec., averaging 96.754 mph around the 2.258-mile road course.
Times tumbled dramatically throughout the session as at least six different drivers held the pole at one time or another. The biggest surprise was Swede Thed Bjork who set the quick time in the middle part of the 30-minute timed qualifying in spite of it being his first visit to the track. Bjork finished the session third quick. Between Koster and Bjork lies current series point leader Jon Fogarty of Wellington, Nev. Fogarty himself held the top spot for much of the second half of the session until he and Koster began to duel each other as they continued to reset the fast time in the last eight minutes. Fogarty's time also fell below the track record as he too tried a last lap flyer, which indeed placed him below the record but still 0.125 sec. behind Koster.
In all 14 of the 29 starters qualified within one second of Koster's time. Returning to form on this first day of official practice for the seventh round of the Pro Series is Barber Dodge Co Rookie of the Year Michael Valiante. The Vancouver, B.C. native is hoping that the second half of the season will finally see him exercising the demons that have plagued him throughout the first half of the season. He finished the day fifth quick behind Andy Lally who continues to show good form.
Rounding out the provisional top ten were Barber Dodge Big Scholarship winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, Jamie Menninga, Nilton Rossoni, Barber Dodge Co Rookie of the Year Roger Yasukawa, and finally in tenth Matt Plumb.
Final qualifying is set for Sat. Aug. 12, at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Round seven of the Barber Dodge Pro Series will take place Sun. Aug. 13 at 4:30 p.m. EDT. <pre> ROUND 7 at the MILLER LITE 200 MID OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE Lexington, Ohio August 11, 2000 QUALIFYING 1
