Eleven minutes into the 20-minute qualifying session for round 3 of the Barber Dodge Pro Series, Sepp Koster of the Netherlands put his car on provisional pole. Shortly after a red flag shone at the start/finish line and would eventually hail the end of the session as rain drops slowly turned to a steady shower. Thus Koster's fast lap of 0:55.248 sec. would stand as the best lap of the session, and may stand as the best lap of the day as the rain continues to fall in the Litchfield Hills around Lime Rock Park.
The red flag was brought out when Alex Sperafico, sensing that rain was imminent, went off on a flyer. Fatefully, the rain came sooner than he expected. The backend of his Barber Dodge Reynard swapped ends with the front then clouted a barrier. Sperafico emerged unscathed, and despite the misfortune, he clung onto the third best time. Sandwiched between the two is Phoenix race-winner Nicolas Rondet.
"We had a good session this morning and figured some things out. The car was working very well in qualifying so I felt happy and went for it. I didn't realize the full potential of the car nor myself, but I don't think anybody else did either. Still I'm confident that I can go a lot quicker," said Koster, driver of the number 3 Stora-Drain Dodge Reynard. "Qualifying well here is essential as it's very hard to pass on this circuit."
Rondet's fastest lap stopped the clocks at 0:55.403 sec. in his In KART USA Dodge Reynard.
"I don't see the track drying out enough that we will be able to go faster this afternoon, but we'll see," said Rondet, 30, of Melle, France. "Starting on the outside of the front row here at Lime Rock though is not too bad, especially if we have a wet race."
Sperafico's best effort in his Iveco Fiat Dodge Reynard fell three-thousandths of second shy of Rondet. His best tour was recorded at 0:55.434 sec.
"I started a good lap, and I thought this is the one and put all my effort into it. Unfortunately, when I tried to brake later into the uphill turn the car came around quickly," said Sperafico.
American Marc Breuers posted his best career qualifying effort as he lies fourth provisionally, only four-tenths of a second slower than the pole time. The third row of the provisional grid sees current Barber-CART Rookie of the Year Ryan Hunter-Reay in the fifth spot with Barber-CART Big Scholarship winner on the outside in sixth place. Second quick this morning, but only seventh in the first qualifying session is Peter Boss with Rafael Sperafico, Davy Cook and Roger Yasukawa filling out the Top-10.
The final qualifying session for the third round of the Barber Dodge Pro Series takes place later today at 4:10 p.m. EDT. The race will go off on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. Qualifying for round 4 will preceded the race on Saturday with the round 4 race getting the green flag on Monday morning, May 28th.
