Championship points co-leader Jon Fogarty sits on the provisional pole after the first day of qualifying at Lime Rock Park for the fourth round of the Barber Dodge Pro Series. Fogarty established the benchmark for Saturday morning's final qualifying session at 54.098 sec for an average speed of 102.498 mph.
Fogarty set the fast time early in the 30-minute session. After pitting for the second time in the session to make some adjustments to his Three Arch Partners Barber Dodge Reynard, Fogarty was able to eclipse his own mark with 13 minutes remaining. Will today's time stand the test?
"We'll see. Tomorrow's qualifying session may be cooler, but it was interesting that the track started going off toward the end of the session, so if the track continues to go the track continues to go that direction we're set," Fogarty commented. "Last year the same thing happened in that it was the first qualifying session was the one that ended up being the one for pole."
"This is such an intensely quick track where you're so busy at the wheel, that you just have to go for it," Fogarty alluded. "It's such a short lap that you have to go all out and exert yourself for 54 seconds."
Lining up beside Fogarty is Nazareth race winner Sepp Koster. His deficit to Fogarty is .412 sec, not easy to find around this demanding track. Koster remains confident that he can find the speed in the final session.
"It's not going to easy to find (the four-tenths needed to close the gap to Fogarty). He did a great job, but for sure I have the confidence in myself and in the car to go faster tomorrow," said the Dutchman who currently resides in Belgium.
Third quick in the first qualifying session was Matt Plumb from Unionville, Pa., just a shade slower than Koster. Plumb set the second quickest time in the session with ten minutes remaining; however, he was nipped by Koster's quick lap with a few laps left.
"I had a little bit of a problem timing traffic as everybody probably did," remarked Plumb. "I put in a lap somewhere towards the middle (of the session) that I actually qualified with, but I never got to go any faster. Anything's possible, we just have to go back and look at the data and figure out where I need to make up the time."
As usual the Barber Dodge Pro Series field is highly competitive with the Top-10 covered by one second and the Top-20 covered by just a tick over two seconds. Peter Boss, Andy Lally and Michael Valiante take up the next three slots on the grid as each had been at, or near the top of the time sheets during the session.
Rounding out the Top-10 provisional qualifiers are Nilton Rossoni Brent Sherman, putting in his best showing of the year thus far, Andre Nicastro and this morning's fast driver Jamie Menninga.
Final qualifying for Monday's race gets underway Saturday at 11:10 a.m. EDT.
