Matt Plumb in his No. 17 CAM2, Arnette Sunglasses Reynard Dodge sped to a second place finish on Sunday, round 5 of 12. The start of the racing weekend was nerve racking - for Friday morning practice, Plumb was forced to run a spare car because his crew, led by mechanic, Ross Mcleod had just the day before completed the repairs after the big crash at Lime Rock Park. While a test driver gave Plumb's No. 17 a good shakedown, Plumb's spare car developed motor problems midway through the session. Therefore, Plumb and engineer Nick Longhi were forced to guess on how to set up the car for qualifying. They guessed right and qualified second, a mere .05 of the pole time. In final qualifying numerous black flags waved brought on by several crashes culminated in Plumb's inability to run a clean lap and he dropped to third.
"At the start of the race the car in fourth position dive-bombed me into turn three and rather than risk a crash, I surrendered the position." After a full-course caution lap from a first lap incident, the race got underway, and the two leaders pulled away. Plumb was held up by the car in front allowing the leaders increase the gap. A lap later the car ahead made contact with the wall exiting turn four, giving Plumb an opportunity to pass. By now the two frontrunners had a six-second lead on Plumb which quickly eroded. While driving the fastest lap of the race, Plumb caught and squeezed past number two during a high-speed section of the course. Plumb then set his sights on the leader, but ran out of time before he could catch him, 3.878 seconds ahead. Round 6 for the Barber Dodge Pro Series will take place at the Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio in support of the CART FedEx Marconi Grand Prix on July 2nd.
Matt Plumb, the Skip Barber Southern Series champion after only a year of racing, returns for his second season in the Barber Dodge Pro Series. Plumb continues to be a top contender for this season's title, touting the fastest race lap of the Detroit race of 1:32.309 at 91.493 mph. The son of Olympic athletes, Plumb opted to give up a promising Wall Street career to pursue his true dream to race.
