ASHLEY FREIBERG MAKES HISTORY AT SEBRING BY WINNING BARBER SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP
Young Woman Wins 6 Races To Clinch Skip Barber Regional Title
SEBRING, Fla. (April 12, 2010) -- Ashley Freiberg has reached one of her goals already this year.
The talented young woman from Homer Glen, Ill., became the first woman to win an overall championship in the history of the Skip Barber Race Series when she captured her sixth race of the year in the Barber Southern Regional series at Sebring International Raceway last Saturday (April 10).
Freiberg (pronounced FRY-BERG) won six of 12 events in the 2009-2010 Southern Regional series and collected 10 podium finishes in races held at Sebring, Homestead Miami Speedway, Carolina Motorsports Park and Road Atlanta this winter. The recent high school graduate defeated Dennis Trebing by 16 points to take the title.
"I still can't believe I won the championship," said Freiberg, a five-time WKA karting champion. "There was a lot of pressure entering the final weekend of Barber racing. I had a three-point lead coming into the final two races. I was able to take fourth in the first race Friday and then win the finale on Saturday. It is thrilling."
Freiberg moved to car racing full time last year and finished sixth in the BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Series presented by Mazda.
"I had success in karting and I was hoping to continue to have success in cars," said Freiberg, whose next racing event will be the Barber National Series weekend on April 23-25 at Virginia International Raceway. "It is a big jump to the Barber Series from karts. So this championship is a great step in my racing career. Now, I want to get ready for the National Series race in two weeks."
Freiberg scored her six regional wins this winter including three wins at Sebring, two wins at Road Atlanta and one win at Carolina. She also won at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in a Western Regional race last month.
Ashley currently ranks seventh in the 2010 Barber National Series standings with ten races remaining.
