Second Half of the Season Kicks Off in East London
The 2008 South African National Formula Vee Championship, kicks off the second half of the 2008 Pro Tour Season, with a visit to the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit. Since the introduction of the semi slick racing tyre, foot flat through Potters Pass, is no longer the do or die challenge it used to be but the new party trick, is coming out of the slipstream and going through Potters or Rifle, side by side! This requires the utmost trust in your fellow competitor and at the speeds attainted through those two bends, the slightest mistake, from either driver, could end in disaster.
Heading up the Formula Vee field, in East London, will be multiple Champion and Current Points leader, Alan Holm (No1 Lasersprint Rhema 2) and although he has a wealth of experience at the circuit, a Formula Vee race in East London can be a bit of a lottery. There are a number of other highly experienced drivers in the field, along with a couple of up and coming hot shots, all experienced in the use of the slipstream and it is not uncommon, to have up to seven cars in the lead bunch, swapping places all around the circuit, throughout the race.
Challenging Holm, all the way, should be the likes of ex Champions Dennis Johns (No2 Geyser Attorneys Rhema 2), Peter Hills (No3 Rigidek MLS Brokers Rhema 2) and Symm Grobler (No4 Auto Mecca Rhema 2), Holm's Lasersprint Team Mate Jaco Schriks (No5 Lasersprint Rhema 2), Trevor Bland (No6 Office Direct Rhema 2) and the Development Drivers, Courtney Steenveld (No8 Indy Oil Rhema 2) and Zaahir Essa (No71 NLDTF Rhema 1).
Having his first race of the year, will be Association Chairman Jannie Geyser Snr (No64 Geyser Attorneys Vision). The car has undergone an extensive rebuild and Geyser Snr, is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel, while Jannie Geyser Jnr (No63 Geyser Attorneys Rhema 2), will be experiencing the East London circuit, for the first time. Also racing there, for the first time, will be Alan Eustice (No77 Execuline Rhema 2) and Johan Gouws (No27 Mantis). Others to watch out for, include Gareth Jackson (No15 Lasersprint Rhema 2), Andre Van Der Merwe (No51 Atlas Dry Cleaners Lantis) and Ben Pienaar (No101 BJ Pro Welding Rhema 2).
The day's racing, includes races for Execuline Shellby Can Am Sports Cars, Investchem Formula Ford Zetec and Kawasaki Masters ZX10 motorcycles, supported by races, for local Regional Saloons and the LUK Coastal Challenge. A day of racing, not to be missed..
