With six races now complete in the 2000 Formula Vee National Championship, Paul Sammin is beginning to make an impact. Sporting the colours of new title sponsors in Finn Auctioneers, Claremorris, Paul finished a credible 4th at Mondello Park Race Meeting held over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

The 19-year-old reigning Formula Vee Novice Champion's race preparations began on the Friday with a test session to scrub in new tyre rubber. "Qualifying on Saturday could have gone a little better," admitted Paul, "as a softer setting on the car would have suited the wet conditions."

A starting position on the fifth row of the grid was the best the Armagruss Sensors / Clonlee Mushrooms backed racer could achieve under the circumstances. Once the green lights flashed the 1600 cc VW powered Sheane '00 rapidly moved up the field. By Lap 2, Paul was in a strong 4th place but his progress was soon halted when the safety car was introduced due to a clash up front.

When the racing started again and on Lap 6, Paul shot into third. From Lap 8 right to the finish Paul and three other front runners enjoyed a ding-dong battle with the Louisburgh native eventually finishing just outside the podium position in 4th.

After a somewhat difficult start to the season, Paul was delighted to be able to show his pace from start to finish without incident. "I really enjoyed being up there with the front runners throughout. Hopefully this is the point where my season begins in earnest. I realise that I am a bit down in the Championship table but there are a number of high profile races in Cadwell Park (UK) and the Phoenix Park to look forward to. What I will be looking for at these venues is my first race win at this level," he added.=20
