Overtaking guaranteed as a Ferrari takes on Indy and a battle of the Benettons develops... Who said that excitement has gone out of the sport?
Wednesday 1st May 2002: Donington Park will reverberate to the sounds of Ferrari, Benetton, Footwork, Arrows and Reynard on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May as 24 cars, including 18 with an F1 pedigree, line-up for the opening round of the 2002 NDS EuroBOSS Series.
With confirmation that Finnish rallying and sportscar ace Harri Toivenen will compete in the Series with a Team Ascari prepared 1996 Benetton, the season opener will be eagerly awaited as local boy and former F3000 regular Phil Andrews looks to prove his worth on his home circuit with the' Flying Finn' and South African Earl Goddard in a 1994 Benetton Cosworth V8 aiming to grab the spoils, the Keystone Computers Trophy and 15 Championship points!
This exciting and rapidly growing single seater formula, with its open paddock for spectators, enables the public to rub shoulders with the drivers and become familiar, at close quarters, with some of the worlds finest racing machines, many having played a part in shaping the history of Grand Prix Racing. Amongst the pack of fast and furious cars will be Klaas Zwart's V12 Ferrari, driven in 1995 by Jean Alesi, and Robbie Sterling's 1999 Reynard Indy Car, formerly driven by Brian Herta, in its' original Miller Lite livery.
The stunning ex-F1, Indy and F3000 cars are responsible for setting fifteen outright lap records at circuits throughout Europe and Phil Andrews, driving a Judd V10-powered Benetton prepared by Team Ascari, has his sights on setting another one.
Phil Andrews, Driver, Team Ascari: "I can't wait to get out on the track and Donington Park is my local circuit, I first raced there when I was just 16 in Formula Ford. I have held lap records in all the categories I have raced at Donington Park so am hoping to keep up the tradition on 6th May. It seems to be a good circuit for me, I have had plenty of wins and am confident that I will be at the front of the field."
Earl Goddard, Driver, Kockney Koi Racing: "This year I shall be undertaking a full season in the NDS EuroBOSS Series and my aim is simply to win or score well in as many races as possible. I can't wait for the first race at Donington having won there twice last season. The car is well prepared and I'll be looking for a hat-trick, the only down side is that I'll probably get less than an hour to familiarise myself with the car before the action starts. Let's hope I'm a quick learner!"
The cars will take to the track at 10:15am for a practice session with cars battling for pole in qualifying at 11:50am. The race powers off at 3.25pm and, with a spectacle of 24 cars thundering away from the starting grid, an action packed race is guaranteed... with overtaking a certainty!
There will be a full days racing on Bank Holiday Monday as part of the H&H Classic Auctions Historic Race Weekend, with support races including the International Historic Formula 2 Trophy, the 750 Motor Club Formula 4 Championship, the Stock Hatch Challenge and a one-hour endurance race for pre-1965 Touring Cars.
Ticketing is available on the day at £10, children under-16 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free-of-charge. For further information relating to the NDS EuroBOSS Series check out www.ndseuroboss.com.
