SCHECKTER: “I’m ready to join any team in Formula One”

Circuito de Albacete, May 12th.- Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff) and Tomas Scheckter were the fastest drivers in today’s qualifying 1 and 2 respectively, taken place during this morning in Albacete. The weather conditions where excellent, sunny and dry, 17 degrees centigrades in the air temperature and 22 C on track.

Montagny lapped the fastest time in 1.21.409. The Frenchman, current leader of the Open Telefonica Series, had no rival: “The track temperature is the cause of the gaps between both pole position laps. In the second session I made a mistake with the set-up, and also the traffic cause a lot of trouble. The track is very abrasive for the tyres, so you are able to profit just two laps with a new set.” Only the Spaniard Burgueño (Repsol-YPF Meycom) was able to catch up the Frenchman, lapping 1.21.988. The speed lap record holder was satisfied: “I’m happy to be in front row again. My car had a problem in the clutch, I made a modification in order to have more grip and it worked out very well.”

Tomas Scheckter (Vergani Racing) did third in the first session, but looked to be very fast in the second qualifying of the day, and wanted to send a clear message to the Formula One team principals: “As you know, I have been fired from Jaguar. The press has much exagerated of what it happened really. Only the 10% of what you have read is true. Now I just want to win races and show to the Formula One teams that I’m ready to join any team.”

Manuel Giao (Sucedería Famà) was unlucky in the first session. The gear ratios of the gear box where inverted by mistake, but he performed very well in the second session, where he was second: “My team did a great job for the second session”. The top drivers are looking fordward to the new Racing project of RPM for 2002: a new Single Seater of 400 HP (Nissan V6 engine). In this sense Giao sentenced: “The F-3000 engine is very good, but the chassis is very old-fashioned, so there’s a very good opportunity in the forthcoming year.”

Andrea Belicchi (SITEC Motorsport), fourth in the second session, was sent to the last two position of the grid as Borja García (Adrián Campos Motorsport), Art. 18.2 of the Sporting Regulations.

Races tomorrow at 12.05 p.m. (18 laps) and at 14.05 p.m.(28 laps-pit stop 6/19)
