Tomas Scheckter will start the first race from the last grid position. His car found below minimum weight during first qualifying
Madrid, 31st March.- Spaniard Rafael Sarandeses (Adrin Campos Motorsport) and Frenchman Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff) will start tomorrow from the pole position in the first two races of the Open Telefonica 2001 season at the circuito del Jarama. Lap times of the 22 entered drivers have been really close -13 drivers in the same second- and that allows to foresee two exciting and closed racing events tomorrow. The Spaniards set the pace in the first session. Rafael Sarandeses -winner of one race at Jarama in 1999- and Angel Burgueno -double win in 1998- got best lap times. Both of them are really familiar with this track. Eleven drivers lapped in one second in this session. Poleman Sarandeses said. "This season there is an incredible level in terms of drivers. I even think that it is superior to any preceding editions of the Open Telefonica. The show tomorrow is guaranteed".
Scheckter, from the back to the top
Out of the track, Tomas Scheckter was in the spotlight. The South African, one of the favourites to win the series, had his lap times in the first session invalidated. The reason was Scheckter's single seater below minimum weight during that qualifying. Scheckter will start first race tomorrow from the last position in the grid. In the second race he will start from third row (fifth best lap time). In second qualifying no adversaries for Frenchman Franck Montagny. Montagny, who had some traction problems in the previous session, got best lap time (1.27.692) ahead of Portuguese Manuel Giao -Open Nissan runner-up in 1999 behind Fernando Alonso- and Sarandeses. <pre> Results Qualifying 1 (grid race 1 / 17 laps) 1.
