WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (August 25, 2000)– Championship points leader, Aaron Justus, of Crestline, Calif., took both pole positions for the U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision Rounds Nine and Ten doubleheader weekend at Watkins Glen. Mike Andersen, of Green Pond, N.J., will start second both races, with Marc-Antoine Camirand, of Trois-Rivieres starting third both races. Driving the No. 32 Forsythe/Indeck/Torco Van Diemen Ford, Justus captured the pole for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s races in record fashion. During the morning qualifying session, Justus posted a new lap record of 1:53.145 (108.179 mph) on the last lap to grab the pole. In the afternoon qualifying session, he repeated the feat snatching the pole on the last green lap, as a caution ended the session early. The added rubber on the track during the afternoon session enabled Justus to post a new lap record of 1:52.756 (108.553 mph). The two poles raise Justus season total to five and nine career, second all-time. “It’s great to be back on pole,” said Justus. “I fell sorry for Marc [Camirand], but not that sorry since I’ve lost the pole to him twice this year on the last lap. The key here, like a lot of tracks is getting a clean lap once you’ve got your tires up to temperature. The plan for the race is to go fast right from the drop of the flag and try to pull a good lead, and let Mike [Andersen] and Marc [Camirand] battle behind it out behind me.” Andersen, driving the No. 11 Valvoline/Pi Research Van Diemen Ford, returned to the series after a two-year hiatus to capture the second starting position for both races. Andersen, the reigning Valvoline Runoffs Formula Continental Champion, just missed capturing his first career pole in both sessions posting quick times of 1:53. 332 (108.001 mph) and 1:52.925 (108.391 mph) respectively. “I’m actually surprised how fast we all went,” said Andersen. “I don’t want to get involved in the championship fight between Aaron [Justus] and Marc [Camirand]. My goal is to run a consistent race and be in contention for the win at the end.” Camirand, driving the No. 96 Key Motorsport Van Diemen Ford, captured third spot on the grid for both races with times of 1:53.446 (107.871 mph) and 1:52.938 (108.378 mph) respectively. The Canadian will be looking to win his fourth win of the season Saturday to close the championship gap between himself and Justus. “I had the pole until the last lap in both sessions,” said Camirand. “I know I have a good car for the races, so I’m not that concerned.”
