HOMETOWN CAMIRAND TAKES PROVISIONAL F2000 POLE AT TROIS-RIVIERES
TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec, Canada - Hometown hero Marc-Antoine Camirand, of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, took the provisional pole for Sunday's U.S. F2000 National Championship Round Ten race, part of Le Grand Prix Player's de Trois-Rivieres. Fellow Canadian Martin Guimont, of Laval, Quebec, was second, followed by Daniel Muniz, of San Jose, Costa Rica. Camirand, driving the No. 96 Player's/Key Motorsport Van Diemen Ford, knocked more than one second off the F2000 qualifying track record at the 1.506-mile circuit with a time of 1:06.276 (81.803 mph)-besting Chris Simmons' 1993 mark of 1:07.320 (80.534 mph). Sunday's race grid will be determined following Saturday's final qualifying session. "The car feels great-Key Motorsport brought a great car to this race," said Camirand, 19, who leads the Drivers' Championship with 184 points. "To get on the podium in this race will be great, but I need to win. I have all of my family and friends here as well as the whole Player's team." Camirand's last appearance at Trois-Rivieres resulted in a 1997 flag-to-flag win in the Canadian Formula Ford Championship. Twelve points behind, Camirand's closest championship rival, English rookie sensation Dan Wheldon, set the fifth-fastest time with a lap of 1:07.080 (80.822 mph). "I'm very disappointed," said Wheldon, 21. "Marc has a big advantage because he knows this place very well, but as the weekend goes on, it'll close up. We went backwards from this morning because of a miss on the setup. We'll definitely be faster in the morning." Guimont, in only his third U.S. F2000 race driving the No. 80 Orion Packaging Van Diemen Ford, is also experienced at Trois-Rivieres-having won the 1998 Canadian Formula Ford event. His lap of 1:06.783 (81.182 mph) was good enough for the provisional outside pole. "Having raced here before in various cars, I had a slight advantage going into today, but it's gone by now," said Guimont. "It's great to be back in a FF2000 car. I didn't remember them being this nice to drive. I think I can make up that 0.5-second on Marc, but he'll probably gain .two-tenths, so we'll see what happens tomorrow." Muniz had his career-best qualifying effort of third, followed by T.J. Bell, of Sparks, Nev., and Wheldon.
