Sebring, FL. - Steve Welk showed good form in his debut with Aiken Racing in the Cooper Tires Championship Series opener last week at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Welk and the Aiken Racing team had there work cut out for them as they only met each other the day before they went on the track.

The race format called for two races and one qualifying. You would start race two from where you finished in race one. Welk put his Sports Car Revolution backed Van Diemen in the fifth spot at the end of the session. Unfortunately a rules violation would relegate Welk to the back of the pack for the start of race one. The 21-year old put in a spirited drive in race one. Welk stormed from 21st on the grid to an eighth place finish turning the sixth fastest race lap while coming through traffic.

Race two proved to be another interesting race for the second season Zetec driver. After picking up a spot at the start Welk was running comfortably in the seventh position with the lead pack. On lap three Welk was hit from behind at the apex of Sebring's Safety Pin corner which spun him 180 degrees and allowed the field to stream by. Welk then put his head down and started charging. Coming from deep in the field a second time Welk found himself in the 10th position when the Checkard flag fell on race two.

"This event had the potential to be a really good one," commented Welk at the end of the week. "I really have to thank the Aiken Racing crew and John Mullen my engineer. We were faced with a lot hills to climb this weekend and when adversity hit the whole team just kept working forward. I think that we have the potential to do some really good things this season and this week gave us a good base to start from. I'm looking forward to Road Atlanta in April where I think we can contend for a podium finish."
