Steve Welk Has Best Career Weekend at Laguna Seca in the Cooper Tires Championship Series
Franklin, WI. - The third event of the Cooper Tires Championship Series was held at the Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca as a part of the Car & Driver Sports Car Invitational on May 1 and 2. Aiken Racing's Steve Welk had a career best weekend at the event posting his best race and qualifying results.
Welk ran the Laguna event with track support from Southern California's Dave Freitas Racing and the combination worked well all weekend long. In qualifying for race one Welk put the Sports Car Revolution Van Diemen eighth on the grid. The opening laps for race one were intense, as cars were off the track more than on. As the race continued the sophomore driver would take advantage of others mistakes and place sixth as the checkered flag flew.
Welk would continue his strong weekend by placing his Aiken Racing car seventh on the grid for race number two. The 21-year old would advance one spot on the opening lap running in sixth right with the lead group. Just before half way a breaking gremlin caused Welk to slow for three laps with a soft break peddle. Once the problem went away Welk tried all he could to catch back to the lead group, but it was not to be. Welk would go on to a tenth place finish, but was lapping as quickly as the leaders in the closing laps of the race.
"This weekend proved to me that this car can run at the front. I had my best weekend in the series statistically and think we have a strong base for Mosport to break into the top five. We had a strong car all weekend long and the team and I kept getting the car better and better. I have to thank Aiken Racing for getting the car to California for this event. As well as Dave Freitas Racing for their support all weekend. Dave and his crew was great to work with and I can not thank them enough for their help."
From Monterrey Welk would hitch a ride Buttonwillow, California for the Speed Secrets Driver Development run offs on the following Tuesday. All though he did not come away with the top prize, he impressed the Speed Secrets people enough that Ross Bentley and his team will continue to work with this rising star for the rest of the 2004 season.
"The Speed Secrets Run Off was a lot of fun. Ross and his team were very helpful through the day. I know that my driving will only improve this year with the help of the Speed Secrets Team. The run off was very productive for me as a driver to be able to work with such talented driving coaches. This will be a major asset for me this year and into my racing career."
