ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (December 2, 2003) -The Cooper Tires Championship Series recently completed a successful test at Roebling Road, in Savannah, Ga. Taking part in the test were all three cars featured in the Championship Series, Formula Ford Zetec, Formula SCCA and Formula Sportscar.
Originally scheduled for three days of testing, the series sanctioned test ended a day earlier, so drivers and teams could spend the Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family. While the first day of testing was interrupted by rain in the afternoon, the second day featured sunny, but chilly conditions. Driving on the 2.02-mile, six turn road course, the 10 drivers present continued to work on car setups, while becoming more comfortable in the car. In addition to drivers and teams getting valuable seatime, Van Diemen and Elite Transmissions staff gathered vital information and a new ECU start-up and pit lane map was successfully tested.
At the conclusion of the test, over 2,000 laps were completed, with no off-course incidents of note. While unofficial, times from the second day of testing were significantly quicker. Posting the fastest time in the test was World Karting Champion Wade Cunningham, of New Zealand, with Zetec Championship Rising Star award winner Adam Pecorari marginally slower. Completing the top-five times in the Zetec class was Shifter Karts USA! star Jason Bowles, the inaugural WKA/SCCA Pro Racing Primus Racing Driver Scholarship winner Steve Welk and American Continental Championship runner-up Erick Hansen. Posting the fastest Formula SCCA time, approximately four seconds slower than the Zetec times, was Skip Barber Regionals National Championships podium finisher Jonathan Klein. All posting times within a second of Klein was Formula SCCA North American Championships runner-up Frank Futrelle, WKA and Stars of Tomorrow front-runner Danny Abbale and two-time SCCA Formula 500 National Champion Elivan Goulart. Driving the lone Formula Sportscar on the second day of testing was multiple Pro Spec Racer race winner Neil Tilbor.
The Cooper Tires Championship Series is currently in the process of finalizing the 2004 schedule for all three classes and will make an announcement shortly.
