HALF WAY HOME, F2000 RETURNS TO ROAD ATLANTA FOR DOUBLEHEADER

FAIRFIELD, N.J. (July 21, 1999)-The U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision returns to Road Atlanta for the first time since 1995 for a doubleheader weekend to kick-off the second half of the season at the July 23-25 Southern Dash-one week after the Nortel Networks Dash at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The weekend features Rounds Eight and Nine of the 14-Race U.S. F2000 season and Rounds Four and Five of the Eight-race American Continental Championship for older chassis. The races will each be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on the Speedvision Network, back-to-back, beginning Friday, August 13 at 9:00 p.m. Jointly sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing and the United States Auto Club, U.S. F2000 National Championship boasts the best up-and-coming talent in open-wheel racing today, and its cut-throat competition has put it at the top of motor racing entertainment for North American race fans. A new association with the Speedvision Network also brings exciting, prime-time television broadcasts into 22 million homes across North America. One week ago, the series competed about an hour south of Road Atlanta at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and following the Road Atlanta weekend, the teams travel to Trois-Rivieres, Que., Canada for its first-ever three-weekend stretch. English rookie sensation Dan Wheldon (No. 5 Primus Racing Van Diemen Ford) looks for his fourth win of the season at Atlanta in hopes of extending his points lead, which stands at 32 (170-138) over Steve Rikert (No. 4 Richard Morgan Racing Van Diemen Ford), who captured his first-career win at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Wheldon's wins have come at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Race Two at Mosport International Raceway and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Wheldon has finished worse than second only once-Race One at Mosport, where he crashed two laps from the end. Marc-Antoine Camirand (No. 96 Key Motorsport Van Diemen Ford) has two wins on the season (Phoenix International Raceway, Mosport Race One), but finished last at Atlanta Motor Speedway with engine problems-dropping him to third in points, with 136. Hungry for their first wins are Bobby Oergel (No. 19 DSTP Motorsports/Quicksilver Mygale Ford) and T.J. Bell (No. 23 El Dorado/MiR/Feature Graphics Van Diemen Ford)-who sit fourth and fifth in points, with 130 and 89, respectively. Bell's Cape Motorsports teammate, Aaron Justus, should be back in the No. 24 Torco Racing Lubricants/MiR Van Diemen Ford after missing the AMS race due to budget constraints. Other drivers in the top-10 waiting for their opportunity to climb to the top of the podium include Jonathan Bottoms (No. 3 Roppe/Team Great Northern Van Diemen Ford), Mark E. Dismore (No. 13 Monster.com Van Diemen Ford), Daniel Muniz (No. 7 Texaco/Havoline/Visa Aval Van Diemen Ford) and Rolando Quintanilla (No. 40 Tecate/Quaker State/RoQuin Van Diemen Ford). Returning to the series for the first time since LMS is 1997 Rookie of the Year and 1998 Mid-Ohio School Driver Achievement Award winner Andy Lally, who drives the No. 72 Carbir Motorsports Carbir Ford for the first time. Lally comes off a win in the Motorola Cup at the Molson Indy weekend July 17 and continues to lead the Sports class points. Mike Johnson, who has twice finished in the top-10 in points, also returns to the driver's seat at his home track in the No. 66 The Racer's Market/Stand 21 Van Diemen Ford ACC entry. Other drivers looking to break out at the Southern Dash weekend include Marietta, Ga. resident Alejandro Garcia (No. 8 Indigo Racing/Dixie Numerics Van Diemen Ford), Tommy Constantine (No. 16 Mexmil Van Diemen Ford) and Galen Puccini (No. 70 RESET Carbir Ford).
