FOUNTAIN, Colo. - English rookie Dan Wheldon moved one step closer to securing the 1999 Road To Indy Oval Crown Championship by taking the pole for the U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision race at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Ryan Hampton, of Glendora, Calif., and Tom Wood, of Calgary, Alberta, Can., completed the top-three. Wheldon, driving the No. 5 Jayhard/Primus Racing Van Diemen Ford, turned a fastest speed of 129.757 mph (27.744 seconds) around the 1.0-mile PPIR oval. This is Wheldon's third pole of the season, and the pole bonus point means he has to finish 17th or better to clinch the five-race Road To Indy Oval Crown. "We had a pretty big advantage in practice, but it's tough to carry that over into a two lap sprint," said Wheldon, 21. "My engineer John Hayes and I have really worked together this weekend since it's a crucial point of the season for the championship. Hopefully it'll work just as well tomorrow." Hampton looks to make his first series start since the opening round at Phoenix, and turned a fastest lap of 129.557 (27.787 seconds)-just missing out on his fourth-career pole in the No. 88 Pymp Syndicate Tatuus Ford. "In the cooler conditions, the car is real good," said Hampton. "I haven't raced a car for five months, so I'm extremely happy. I was afraid I'd be rusty. Tom (Wood) and I will have to have some Team Tatuus tactics to get up front." Wood's effort was his career-best in the No. 99 Plains Energy/Round-Up Resource Service Tatuus Ford with a lap of 128.953 mph (27.917 seconds). "The Tatuus chassis makes a really good oval car," said Wood. "I think (Ryan) Hampton and I will work together to get by Dan (Wheldon) and race from there." Rolando Quintanilla, of Mexico, and Andy Lally, of Northport, N.Y., completed the top-five. Lally's effort was a career-best in the Carbir chassis. Steve Rikert, the only driver capable of catching Wheldon in the Road To Indy Oval Crown, will start seventh.
