Morioka Should be Ready to Go Saturday Morning at Pikes Peak Int'l

FOUNTAIN, Colo., June 27, 4 p.m. - Work is progressing nicely on Zak Morioka's Kentucky Fried Chicken of Brazil/A.M.E. Sports Van Diemen No. 27 U.S. Formula Ford 2000 car, which was involved in an accident Friday morning at Pikes Peak Int'l Raceway after setting the fastest lap in the first official practice session.

The accident occurred when James Yott spun in front of Morioka, clipped his car's front end, and Morioka hit the outside wall in turn four. No one was hurt.

Morioka and the Hayes Motorsports team missed the afternoon practice session to repair the car, but expect to be ready for the qualifying session Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Morioka's fastest lap of 27.248 seconds (132.11 mph) is still the top speed turned in practice here so far, so he holds the track record so far. Luciano Zangirolami was the fastest in Friday afternoon's practice session, but he's second fastest in the combined order with his lap of 27.315 (131.79 mph).

"It really wasn't as bad as it could have been," Morioka said of the damage to his car. "The frame wasn't bent, the gearbox was O.K. and the motor was O.K.; it was mostly just some right-side body and suspension pieces.

"We had to buy some parts from other teams to repair it, but we're getting it fixed. We don't have to use the back-up car, and hopefully we can make the set-up and the balance the same as we had it before the accident. We'll just do the best we can and see how it goes in the morning."
