Cooper Series Teams Use Break to Test at Mid-Ohio
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (June 3, 2003) -The Cooper Tires Championship Series recently completed a successful test at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Conducted in preparation for the upcoming rounds at Mid-Ohio in late June and early August, several teams took part in the test.
Commencing under sunny skies, the morning session featured varying weather conditions. Despite the track being damp the majority of the session, the drivers and teams were able to work on assorted race setups. Entering the lunch break Andersen Walko driver Adam Pecorari had posted the fastest unofficial lap of the session, followed by fellow Formula Ford Zetec Championship drivers Ian Bass and Bobby Wilson in Cape Motorsports cars. When testing resumed in the afternoon under bright sunshine, the track was dry. Continuing to work on different setups, the times steadily decreased as the test progressed.
At the conclusion of the test, over 1,000 laps had been completed, with only two cars suffering minor damage from off-course incidents. While unofficial, posting the fastest time in the test was Pecorari, of Aston, Pa., with a lap of 1:23.6. Completing the top-three was Wilson, of Dousman, Wis., and Jason Byers, of Livonia, Mich., driving for St. Clair Motorsports.
"The car is the best it's ever been," said Pecorari after the test. "In the morning session we were real quick, but the tires went away. After lunch we made some changes to the car and I altered my driving style a little, which really helped. By the end of the day we were going quicker than we did last year, without hurting the tires. I can't wait to come back and go racing in June."
The fifth event of 2004 Cooper Tires Championship Series is June 25-27, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, as part of the American Le Mans at Mid-Ohio.
