LEXINGTON, Ohio (August 13)- English rookie Dan Wheldon earned his second-career U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision pole position, topping teammate Daniel Muniz and T.J. Bell for Saturday's 22-lap, 49.676-mile Round 11 race, part of the FedEx Championship Series Miller Lite 200 Weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Wheldon drove the No. 5 Jayhard/Primus Racing Van Diemen Ford to a fastest lap of 1:23.737 (97.075 mph)-0.088-second faster than Muniz, of Costa Rica. "I went to new tires part of the way through the session and set the fast time right away, backed it up on the next couple laps and then cooled it," said Wheldon, 21, who is now 21 points behind Championship leader Marc-Antoine Camirand. "The team kept telling me that the difference was dropping to two-tenths and then one-tenth, but I'd already gotten the best out of my tires. I've been second on the grid four times this year. I didn't want to be a bridesmaid anymore." Muniz will start from the front row in the No. 7 Texaco-Havoline/Visa Aval Van Diemen Ford for the first time in his career after a lap of 1:23.825 (96.973 mph). "This is just fantastic," said Muniz, 19. "After qualifying third the last race and now second, I think the season is coming around for us-now I just need to finish on the podium. The Primus Team and Chief Engineer John Hayes really have a great setup for this track and we just make small adjustments to suit our style and the conditions." The front row sweep was the team's third in the last four Mid-Ohio rounds. Hayes looks for his fifth-straight win at the track on Saturday. In the series' trip to Mid-Ohio in June, Wheldon took the win, and Mark Dismore, in the third Primus car, took the pole and the qualifying record at 1:23.695. Dismore suffered from engine problems during Friday's session and will start seventh. Bell, of Sparks, Nev., equaled his career-best qualifying effort of third with a lap of 1:24.105 (96.651 mph) in the No. 23 Eldorado/MiR/Cape Van Diemen Ford. "The last five or six races, I've had to come from deep in the field to make it up front in the race, so it's great to be starting up here," said Bell, 18. "I think we have a great shot at winning because I'm a better racer than a qualifier." Bell's teammate, Jeff Wright, of Ireland, was fourth, followed by Mexican Rolando Quintanilla. Camirand, who has three-straight podium finishes and leads the Championship with four rounds to go, qualified ninth. Guy Cosmo, of South Setauket, N.Y., took the ACC pole for older cars, 11th overall. Cosmo has swept all six ACC poles this season.
