Cunningham Sweeps Poles At Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, CALIF. (May 2, 2004) - Wade Cunningham, of New Zealand, captured the pole position for Round Six of the Formula Ford Zetec Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Completing the top-three is Bobby Wilson, of Dousman, Wisc. and Ian Lacy, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
Under sunny skies, 20 Zetec Championship cars rolled on track early Sunday morning for qualifying. Setting the grid for Round Six later in the day, the field immediately set about attacking the 2.238-mile road course. Running together on course, Cunningham, in the No. 2 RCC/WPL/Placemakers Mt. Wellington/Turbo Traders Cape MotorsportsVan Diemen Ford, and Wilson, in the No. 2 Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, jumped to the top of the charts early in the session. With the times steadily dropping as the session progressed, the duo remained first and second followed by Andrew Prendeville and Ian Lacy. In the closing stages of qualifying, Lacy, in the No. 7 JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, posted a lap in the 1:26's to move into third position. At the checkered flag, Cunningham had captured his fourth consecutive pole position, with a lap of 1:26.806 (92.813 MPH), a new track record.
"Obviously I'm very pleased to score my fourth pole position in a row," said Cunningham, who becomes only the fifth driver in Zetec Championship history to score four consecutive pole positions. "We did a lot of problem solving last night and the team once again gave me a great car. These pole position points could prove vital at the end of the season."
Completing the top-five in qualifying is Prendeville, of Monroeville, Pa., in the No. 25 Racelink/Roos Racing School Andersen Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford and Jason Bowles, Ontario, Calif., in the No. 23 PR1 Motorsports JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford. Green flag for Round Six of the Formula Ford Zetec Championship is scheduled to wave at 4:15 p.m., Sunday, May 2, 2004.
