Cunningham Continues Pole Streak at Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, CALIF. (April 30, 2004) - Wade Cunningham, of New Zealand, captured the pole position for Round Five of the Formula Ford Zetec Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Completing the top-three is Bobby Wilson, of Dousman, Wisc. and Ian Lacy, of Lake Havasu City, Ari.
In typical sunny California weather, qualifying for the fifth round of the 2004 season got underway in the late afternoon. Following pre-event testing and a 30-minute practice session in the morning, the drivers attacked the 2.238-mile road course. Just as the sticker Cooper Zeon UHP tires were just getting up to ideal temperatures, the red flag was shown, for Adam Pecorari stopped on course. When the session resumed, several drivers worked with their teammates to post a quick a lap. Running together, Cape Motorsports teammates Cunningham and Wilson immediately moved to the top of the charts, with Cunningham in the No. 2 RCC/WPL/Placemakers Mt. Wellington/Turbo traders Cape MotorsportsVan Diemen Ford posting the fastest time. As the session progressed, the duo remained quickest, alternating fastest times. At the midway point of the session, Wilson had posted the fastest lap in the No. 3 Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, followed closely by Cunningham and Lacy, in the No. 7 JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, who had moved into third position. At the checkered flag, Cunningham had retaken the pole position with a lap of 1:26.340 (93.314 MPH), to capture his third consecutive pole position.
"That was a lot of fun," said Cunningham, who had never raced at Laguna Seca prior to pre-event testing on Thursday. "Bobby [Wilson] pushing me definitely helped, as I was able to see where I needed to be quicker. I'm looking forward to the second qualifying. I think we can still find some more speed."
Completing the top-five in qualifying is Ron White, of Santa Clara, Calif., in the No. 8 Ad-Tech/RC20/Beeline Marketing/Impact Racing/Decal Works JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford and Jason Bowles, Ontario, Calif., in the No. 23 PR1 Motorsports JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford. Green flag for Round Five of the Formula Ford Zetec Championship is scheduled to fall at 4:10 p.m., Saturday, May 1, 2004.
