SAVAGE, Minn. (March 5, 2003) -- JDC Motorsports, Ltd. announced today that 2002 WKA/SCCA Pro Racing karting Champions Craig Baltzer and Steve Welk will drive for the team in the 2003 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship.
Winners of the WKA/SCCA Pro Racing Primus Racing Driver Scholarship, Baltzer and Welk will both make the move to the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship, with a portion of the funding paid by their scholarships.
Baltzer, 18, recorded a podium finish in his Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship debut weekend in 2002 at the VIRginia International Raceway doubleheader season-finale with Cape Motorsports.
"This is going to be the biggest year of my racing life," said Baltzer, who, along with capturing the WKA/SCCA Pro Racing ICC Constructors Championship, drove in the Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by Racer last season. "I am focused on winning the Championship, but that will be very tough as a rookie. I'm going to take it one race at a time and get use to working with the team."
The 20 year-old Welk captured the 2002 WKA/SCCA Pro Racing ICA Constructors Championship, along with a full campaign in the Formula Dodge National Championship.
"I'm really excited for the opportunity to compete in the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship with JDC Motorsports," said Welk, who recently captured back-to-back wins from the pole in the Skip Barber Race Series East West Shootout at Sebring International Raceway. "My goal is to win the Rookie of the Year award as well as score some podium finishes.
"I was present for the Driver Shootout that Steve [Welk] and Craig [Baltzer] won and was impressed with how they both performed there," said John Church, JDC Motorsports team owner. "When the opportunity to work with these two drivers this season materialized, I jumped at the chance."
Baltzer and Welk, friends who have driven against each other in karting for nearly a decade, welcome the opportunity to work as teammates.
"While Steve and I have different driving styles, I think we will work together well as teammates," said Baltzer. "While we are friends off the track, it will be all business when the green flag drops."
"Working with Craig is going to be a fantastic opportunity," said Welk. "I think there will be a fun, productive rivalry going on. I don't think there is a thing we do that isn't competitive between the two of us."
"I'd like to thank WKA/SCCA Pro Racing and Primus Racing for offering this scholarship program and will do my best to represent the karting scholarship program well."
