J.R. Hildebrand Signs with Cape Motorsports for 2006 Cooper Series Assault
Palmetto, Fla. (February 22, 2006) -- 2005 Team USA Scholarship winner J.R. Hildebrand will contest the 2006 Cooper Tires Formula Ford 2000 Championship with Cape Motorsports. After scoring three podium finishes in four Cooper Series races in 2005 and earning a close second in the Pacific F2000 championship with PR1 Motorsports, J.R. found himself at the top of brothers Nicholas and Dominic Cape's list of potential candidates to join one of the most successful F2000 teams of all time.
Hildebrand, 18, from Sausalito, Calif., was invited to test for Cape Motorsports in January, and after exceeding expectations was asked to join the Florida-based team for the upcoming season.
"The test went quite well. I was quickly able to get a handle on the car and the track, actually breaking the track record by midway through the first day! I think this bodes very well for the upcoming season," said Hildebrand.
"The Cape brothers and I were immediately able to communicate well. The opportunity to run with such a distinguished team is great, and I will be able to learn a great deal from them this year," he added.
Hildebrand will make his debut for the team in the opening pair of races at Road Atlanta, in Braselton, Ga., on May 11-13, and has high hopes of adding to the team's roster of success, which includes winning championship titles in 2000, 2002 and 2004.
"J.R.'s performance in the test went far above expectations," declared Dominic Cape, "and he will definitely be one to beat in the championship this year."
The 2006 Cooper Tires Formula Ford 2000 Championship will be highly competitive, and is attracting drivers from all over the world. The series will support the Champ Car World Series on four occasions -- at Portland International Raceway, the Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, the Exhibition Place street circuit in Toronto, and Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. It will also accompany the American Le Mans Series at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course and Mosport International Raceway.
"The series should be fantastic this year, and with the exposure in front of the Champ Car and Atlantic teams, it's sure to help me move up to those ranks in the coming years," said Hildebrand, who hopes to graduate into the Champ Car Atlantic Series Powered by Mazda in 2007.
