Lally Is Ready for More

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 28 - Highcroft Racing's Andy Lally is ready for more. In the U.S. Formula 2000 doubleheader at Charlotte Motor Speedway last year, the young driver from Northport, N.Y., was a star of both shows in his Bowman Quicksilver Ford. The track's name has been changed to Lowe's Motor Speedway in the interim, but Lally hopes to repeat his strong showings of last year here - with a little change in one of the race's final rundown - in the doubleheader here this weekend. "In the first race I led the most laps, set the fastest lap of the race, and finished second under a late-race yellow flag," he recalls. "I started second in the second race, led the first five laps, and then I got passed. I was charging back up when the motor blew halfway into the race," he says. "Before the engine problem, we were really moving. It was definitely two of our best showings last year." Joining Lally and Highcroft Racing mechanic Biff Bascetta this weekend will be Brendan Cunnane, the series' "Crew Chief of the Year" in 1995, when he tweaked the cars driven by that year's national champion, Jeret Schroeder. "I'm happy that Biff and I have teamed up with our pal Brendan this weekend," Lally says. "We'll just go for it and see what happens. With racing, who knows?" Practice is slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and again from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. Time trials for the first race are set for 5 p.m. Friday, with the race beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday's schedule has practice at 12:30 p.m., time trials at 3 p.m. and the second race at 6 p.m., right before the VisionAire 500 Pep Boys Indy Racing League headliner.
