Cunningham Sets Time To Beat in Practice at Infineon
SONOMA, CALIF. (July 16, 2003) - Wade Cunningham, of Auckland, New Zealand, posted the fastest time Friday, during practice for Rounds Eleven and Twelve of the Formula Ford Zetec Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Infineon Raceway.
Competing on the high-speed 2.53-mile road course for the first time since 1993, the Zetec Championship had two practice sessions on Friday. In ideal sunny and warm conditions, the first session got underway early in the morning. Displaying the speed shown in pre-event-testing, in which he was second quickest overall, Cunningham posted the fastest time in the session, with a lap of 1:33.288 (97.633 mph).
Completing the top-three in the first practice session was Adam Pecorari, of Aston, Pa., in the No. 28 SAI Hydraulics Andersen Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford and Ian Lacy, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in the No. 3 Mastercraft Tires JDC Motorsports Van Diemen Ford. Posting the fastest lap in the American Continental Class was Greg Pizzo, of San Jose, Calif., in the No. 49 ChampCarFanatics.com GP Motorsports Van Diemen Ford.
Following a lengthy break, the second practice session commenced late in the afternoon. As the teams continued to work on car setups and the track began to acquire more grip from the rubber being laid down, the times steadily began to fall. At the conclusion of the session, Cunningham was once again quickest, posting a new fast lap of 1:32.915.
"The track definitely had more grip that session," said Cunningham, who took the ESPN Russell Racing School on Thursday to become acclimated to the track layout. "The car is working really well, but I still think we can go quicker."
Completing the top-three in the final practice session was Lacy and Andrew Prendeville, of Monroeville, Pa., in the No. 25 Racelink/Roos Racing School Andersen Walko Van Diemen Ford. The fastest ACC was Pizzo.
Commencing at 8:00 a.m. (PT), Saturday, July 17, Cunningham will attempt to capture his series-high fifth pole position. Race one of the doubleheader will be at 5:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.
