Guerrieri races to a strong finish at Road Atlanta

Braselton, GA. April 16, 2005- Chris Guerrieri of Pickering Ontario Canada, the Canadian Formula Ford 1600 Canadian champion in 2003, traveled to Road Atlanta this past weekend . Race car drivers from 15 different states and from as far afield as Great Britain, Venezuela and Canada are among a strong field for the opening two rounds of the 2005 Cooper Tires Championship Series for Formula Ford 2000 cars.

In the first race of the weekend, Guerrieri started in the fifth position on the starting grid in a field of 35 competitors . By the end of the first lap he had passed two cars to take third place. By lap 11 Guerrieri was lapping traffic and had his sites set on the leaders. On lap 14 he approached another slower car, that had been shown the blue flag signal to allow the faster Guerrieri to pass. Suddenly the inexperienced driver put his car into a spin, striking the left side of the Guerrieri racecar sending him into the wall in turn 7. Aiken Racing, the team Guerrieri races with, put their mechanics to work on repairing the car and setting it up again for race conditions. They worked into the evening and again the next day to make the car ready for the second of two races. Starting third on the grid in the second race, Guerrieri was closely following the pole sitter and the second place starter when suddenly he was stricken by mechanical failure early on. " All of a sudden it felt like the steering had a 100 pound weight attached to it, " says Guerrieri, " I knew all I could do was hold on and keep going."

What had happened was a connector that secures the steering mechanism to the sway bar had come loose and eventually detached. Using all his strength and experience Guerrieri was able to keep the car on the track while still registering some impressive lap times. Respecting his fellow competitors, he freely allowed the two cars following him to pass when they eventually closed the huge lead he had built up. Guerrieri piloted his Formula Ford Zetec race car to a fifth place finish in race two of the weekend. Racing at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, Guerrieri, one of the favorites in the race, maneuvered his car around the twisting track with ease and precision. Road Atlanta in known for it's many high and low speed corners as well as its many elevation changes.

Guerrieri says, " I would like to thank my sponsors for the opportunity to be able to compete this year. With the support of medbroadcast.co.com, Cherry Beach Sound, RPG Electric and Northstar Promotions & Muskoka Woods Sports Resort , I'm anticipating a very competitive and successful season of racing."

The next stop for the Formula Ford Zetec Copper Championship Series will be at the legendary Mid-Ohio racetrack on Sunday May 22. With a strong start to the season, Guerrieri will be looking for a podium position.
