Andersen Walko Racing Rules Saturday's Zetec Race at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, May 22 - They're not Canadian, but Andrew Prendeville and Adam Pecorari got into the spirit of Victoria Day Weekend in high style Saturday at Mosport International Raceway.
Things couldn't have gone better for the Andersen Walko Racing squad Saturday in Formula Zetec competition, as the team's two drivers in the Cooper Tires Championship Series event finished first and second.
Prendeville, of Monroeville, Pa., climbed on top of the highest step of the podium at the conclusion of the 18-lap, 44.262-mile race, while his teammate, Aston, Pa.'s Pecorari, was right beside him in second place.
Prendeville's Andersen Walko Racing/Racelink/Roos Racing School Van Diemen Ford No. 25 got the lead for good on lap two. Pecorari's Andersen Walko Racing/SAI Hydraulics Van Diemen Ford No. 28 was in second shortly thereafter, and from that point on none of their rivals could catch either of them.
Prendeville started second and Pecorari started fifth.
"I got a good start," Prendeville reported. "I got the lead going into turn two by getting around Ian Lacy. By turn five he was right behind me though. He got a good draft on me and pulled out around me in turn eight. We ran side-by-side through turns eight and nine.
"He was ahead of me for turn 10, and we were side-by-side again on the frontstretch.
"Then on lap two going into turn two he got loose going into the corner and spun to the outside on his own. I just missed him, and I got the lead. By that time Adam was in second place.
"We had a full-course caution for a few laps. I got a good jump on the restart, and then Adam and I pulled away from Jason Bowles and Bobby Wilson. Wilson got third.
"Adam got a run on me a couple of times; I set the fastest lap of the race and he was second-fastest. The cars were perfect. The Andersen Walko cars are the fastest things here this weekend so far!"
"We had great results today!" Pecorari concurred. "The car was amazing. Andrew and I had a pretty good lead on the field and it was a good race. After the yellow flag I was consistently three to five car lengths behind, so it was close. The team is awesome; the cars are working great!"
"The boys did an unbelievable job today," said team co-owner Dan Andersen. "They wisely decided not to fight each other and they both had a very mature drive. They ran consistent laps all the way through. They were one-two in the fastest laps too, and they were within one-tenth of a second. I'm very happy with them. I was impressed!"
This race was the first of a doubleheader for this division here at Mosport this weekend. Prendeville will start first tomorrow by virtue of winning his first pole of the season on Friday. Pecorari will start fifth in tomorrow's race.
Showcasing the ups and downs of the sport, the news wasn't as good for the team's efforts in the Formula SCCA division. Danny Abbale of Northport, N.Y. cart-wheeled his car in turn one during practice and although he escaped injury, he wasn't able to compete here this weekend. His teammate, Chris Meredith of Potomac, Md., blew his engine during qualifying and also went home early, so neither were able to compete in either of the two FSCCA races here this weekend.
