Columbia, SC --(June 30,2003)- Nineteen year old Andy Brumbaugh competed in his native state over the weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in rounds five and six of the 2003 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship. Andy brought home solid safe fifth and seventh place finishes in Sunday's races run in conjunction with the Rolex Grand-Am Series.
"I love coming to Mid-Ohio," said Brumbaugh. " I kind of grew up here coming to my father's karting and Formula Ford races here as well as spectating at countless pro races with my parents. The track is demanding and tough. Doing a fast lap here is very satisfying. I had certain goals and restrictions this weekend and pretty much accomplished the objective with decent points paying positions."
"Before the season started it looked almost certain that we had sponsorship lined up for the Mid-Ohio events," said Andy LLC President Candy Brumbaugh. "The company had prior experience with using racing hospitality to promote their business, really liked our program and knew us personally. Logistical details just could not be sorted out so it fell through. As a result, Andy had to operate on a short leash at Mid-Ohio in order to move on to Road America. Any mistake would jeopardize going forward. Andy was smart, never put a wheel wrong, didn't break anything and now has a shot at continuing."
Dominic Cape, President of Cape Motorsports said, "Andy came out of the chute really focused and flying. He was in the top five for virtually every session. I'd love to see him really turned loose on this track. He has amazing focus and determination. He's got what it takes but at this level it is so tough for talented but low budget driver's like Andy to show what they can do. One big off can end a season."
Andy has July off from driving but will be kept busy attending the Cleveland CART race as well as driver coaching and instructing. In August Andy returns to action in the Zetec championship at Road America and Mid-Ohio. Early September will find Andy racing a Porsche at historic Watkins Glen.
